You are purchasing a: Sheila’s Wood Figurine Decor INSIDE-OUTSIDE HOUSE 1870 Longwood, Florida The»Inside-Outside» house is an early prefabrication built in Boston around 1870, by Captain W. Pierce. Receiving its name from its architectural design the «Inside-Outside» house is believed to have been constructed in the same style as the cabins on 19th century whaling ships. The frame work of the house is on the outside of its exterior wall rather then the interior, thus the name Inside-Outside House. Carefully dismantled in 1873, the house was moved from Boston by ship, barge and mule to Altamonte Springs, Florida. Retiring from the sea there in 1878, Captain Pierce became a cabinetmaker, usimg the first floor of his home for his shop and the second floor for his residence. In 1973 the house was moved intact from the present site of the Medical Arts Building on Boston Avenue to Longwood and restored where it now serves as a gift shop. Brutus the cat, believed to be haunting the house, was the constant companion of Captain Pierce. He was a large black cat that never left the captain’s side. At every port he was the first ashore, and the last to come back aboard. Brutus also retired from the sea and moved to Florida with Captain Pierce. To honor him when he died, Captain Pierce built an ornate casket out of teak, a wood mostly known for building ships, and buried him in Altamonte Springs. Neighbors and former shop owners believe that when the house was moved his spirit moved along with it.
