THESE STAMPS RECENTLY SURFACED AT AN AUCTION FROM THE ASSETS OF A DEFUNCT PHILATELIC STORE IN THE SOUTHWEST. THE QUALITY IS IMPRESSIVE, FOR SUCH OLD STAMPS HAVE LONG VANISHED FROM EVERYDAY USE, BEING RARE TO BE FOUND EVEN IN ITS OWN COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. THESE WERE RATED IN COLONS, A NOW DEFUNCT CURRENCY. ON TOP OF THAT, THESE 35 YEAR OLD STAMPS WERE, UNTIL NOW, NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT TOGETHER, AS EACH ORIGINAL SHEET CARRIED THE SAME STAMP, OF THE SAME DENOMINATION. WE WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY TO LOCATE SHEETS OF ALL 3 DENOMINATIONS!!! THE DESIGN IS BASED ON LORENZO HOMAR’S ORIGINAL LOGO FOR THE 1979 PANAMERICAN GAMES. HOMAR, WHO PASSED AWAY SEVERAL YEARS AGO, HAS BEEN PRAISED AS PUERTO RICO’S BEST GRAPHIC DESIGNER EVER, AND AS SUCH, ONE OF AMERICA’S FINEST. LORENZO ACTUALLY DIDN’T DRAW WHEN YOUNG. HE WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED GYMNAST IN NEW YORK; SPORTS WAS HIS MAIN FOCUS. BEING IN GOOD SHAPE AT THE WRONG TIME, LORENZO SERVED IN WWII, AT THE PACIFIC THEATER, IN A COMBAT ENGINEER UNIT AS A DRAFTSMAN. IT WAS DRAWING PLANS AND MAPS THAT HE WOKE UP TO THE WORLD OF VISUAL EXPRESSIONISM.HE THEN RETURNS TO PUERTO RICO, WHERE HE LANDED WORK PRODUCING COVERS AND POSTERS FOR THE INSTITUTE OF PUERTO RICAN CULTURE AND OTHER COMMONWEALTH PUBLIC AGENCIES, QUICKLY BUILDING A REPUTATION FOR ACCURACY AT DEPICTING WHAT PEOPLE WANTED EXPRESSED, EVENTUALLY WORKING FOR MANY GROUPS AND PUBLISHERS.
