Kit: Meng TS-031 (2017)Dimensions: 11.5″ x 4.5″ x 4.5″ Since the appearance of the 8.8cm Flak 41 anti-aircraft gun in 1941. Hitler who was keen on powerful anti-tank guns expected to improve and use it for the anti-tank purpose. His idea finally resulted in the Ferdinand tank destroyer with an 8.8cm Pak 43/2 anti-tank gun and the King Tiger heavy tank with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 tank gun. The King Tiger was a perfect example of Hitler’s excessive obsession with heavy firepower. In 1941, he ordered Porsche and Henschel to modify the ongoing VK45.01 heavy tank (Tiger I) design to mount a more powerful main gun. At that time the most powerful opponents of German tanks in battlefields were just KV-1 and Matilda tanks. The initial design of the powerful JS-2 and T26 were not even started. However, this crazy dream was delayed by technical limitations. In terms of main gun, after many improvements and bids of Rheinmetall and Krupp, Pak 43, an anti-tank version of the Flak 41, finally met operational requirements by 1943. The KwK43 had a relatively reliable prototype too. As for the chassis, it went through many more difficulties. Both Porsche’s radical VK45.02P and Henschel’s conservative VK45.02H were given up. Only 50 new turrets for VK45.02P produced by Krupp were kept. Porsche put forward the VK45.03P very soon. This design still retained Dr. Porsche’s personal preference: electric drive. Like the previous VK45.01P and VK45.02P. it had weak reliability. German military selected Henschel’s VK45.03H at last. After several tiny modifications, this tank was designated Tiger B (Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B) and its mass-production started in the second half of 1943. This was German’s most powerful heavy tank, which was called King Tiger by the Allied forces. In response to German military’s requirements, Henschel’s King Tiger incorporated many design features of the Panther medium tank. Many King Tiger parts were identical to those of the Panther’s. The King Tiger adopted a sloped armor design similar to Panther’s. Its front upper glacis was as thick as 150mm with a 50-degree angle. It could only be penetrated by APDS fired from the British QF 17-pounder anti-tank gun. Moreover, its front turret armor was 180mm thick, and even the hull side armor was up to 80mm thick. Although the quality of German armor steel lowered in the later part of WWII, King Tiger’s thick armor could stand against the attack of most weapons of the Allied and Soviet forces. The King Tiger was powered by the 690hp water-cooled 12- cylinder Maybach HL230 engine which was also used in the Panther medium tank. It’s the best German engine in the later part of WWII. For transmission, Henschel adopted the Maybach OG40 12 16B transmission after repeatedly testing. With the HL230 engine and Maybach OG40 12 16B transmission, the King Tiger could drive up to the speed of 40km/h. The King Tiger’s impressive KwK 43 tank gun was as powerful as the Pak 43 anti-tank gun. When it fired PzGr. 40/43 armor-piercing rounds, the rounds could penetrate 153mm homogeneous steel armor angled at 30 degrees at the distance of 2000m. This meant that King Tiger could destroy most opponents within regular combat distance. The first 50 King Tiger tanks were mounted with electrically driven turrets which were manufactured by Krupp for Porsche’s VK45.02P. This turret had rounded front turret armor, and it was erroneously dubbed the «Porsche Turret». After that, King Tigers were fitted with the turrets as the «Henschel Turrets». Vehicles manufactured after September 1944 were supplied without Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine coating. There were also a number of changes on hull hatches, drive sprockets, tracks and pioneer tools. A total of just 489 King Tigers were manufactured before the factories were captured by the Allied forces. German military assigned King Tigers to the combat experienced crews of independent heavy panzer battalions. They were deployed to the critical positions in battlefields. At the time, the Germans were at stake. These heavy panzer battalions with King Tigers played quite an important role in the battlefields. When King Tigers first entered battles in 1944, their incomparable combat power greatly shocked their opponents. No matter that they encountered M4 and Cromwell from the Allied forces, or the Soviet T-34, or even the most powerful Soviet JS-2 heavy tanks, the King Tigers could defeat opponents with a force inferior in number thanks to their good performance. This brought numerous troubles for their opponents in terms of tactics and psychology. The name of King Tiger was spread quickly among Allied soldiers. Because of Germany’s overall weak national strength, and King Tiger’s heavy weight and long manufacturing time, this heavy tank didn’t reverse the whole battle situation. But as German’s most advanced tank in the WWII, the King Tiger occupied a unique position in history.
